Greg
McRay
Greg
McRay was fortunate to grow up in a musical family. His father,
saxophonist Robert McRay, played the jazz circuit both in
the U.S. and Europe and exposed Greg's ear to the best of
jazz. Starting his formal study of drums in high school, Greg
played under the mentorship of Benny Green at the well-respected
jazz program at Berkeley High School.
Greg continued
his studies at Laney College where he performed in both the
concert band and Ed Kelly's Jazz Combo. His most influential
teachers were Jim Smith and Tony Williams. Since then he has
continued to expand his rhythmic repertoire by playing with
many jazz, fusion, and rock bands.
Drawing
on the powerful musicianship of Art Blakey, Max Roach, Bill
Bruford, and Billy Cobham, Greg brought his creative drum
playing to Copus in the summer of 2002 and has been with them
ever since.
