1. APRIL GIGS
Tomorrow night, APRIL 1st, Copus will be returning to the wondrous Vallejo
where artists and enthusiastic audiences abound! Due to the overwhelming
success of the performing arts series/magazine "Listen + Be Heard",
the unstoppable Martha Cinader and Tony Mims have opened up their own
place called - yes, you guessed it - the Listen + Be Heard Café.
On Friday night you will have the rare opportunity to hear the dynamic
spoken word group Wordwind and Copus on one stage. Better come check
this out before ticket prices go up! Show starts at 8pm. 818 Marin Street,
Vallejo. 707-554-4540 or www.listenandbeheard.net for more information.
Sunday evening,
APRIL 10th, please join us at The Veterans' War Memorial Building (Herbst
Theatre building) for a "Holistic Spiritual Health African Fashion
Festival" that will include a fashion show by amazing Bay Area
designers, motivational speaking by Oba Oosa Gbemi Israel, poetics by
Marvin X and Sister MKenya, guitarist Shado, and Copus. Lots of artist
and spiritual food vendors will round out the evening. This event is
a fundraiser for Ebony's Fashion Model and Designers, Inc. 5-10pm. 401
VanNess Avenue, 2nd floor. $10 donation requested. 510-835-0375 or Nisayah@yahoo.com
for more information.
2. MONTEREY IN JUNE
Copus has been asked to perform at the Summer Fest Arts + Crafts Faire
sponsored by the Pacific Repertory Theatre in Monterey the weekend of
June 25-26. Wendy is busily attempting to secure another gig around
Carmel during those days to maximize spreading the Copus word to the
Monterey Bay area (perhaps we'll get Clint Eastwood to speak a few words
with Copus?). More details later, but check out www.pacrep.org to learn
about the organization.
3. TOMMY OSUNA/WORLD RHYTHM
MAGAZINE
When Royal and Wendy were at the Midem conference in Cannes, France
a few years ago, the first person they met was the dynamic manager for
Tommy Osuna (and then quickly thereafter - Tommy himself). We all had
an instant connection, listened to cuts from one another's CDs, exchanged
business cards and then merrily went on our own ways - pursuing dreams
in this crazy music business. Two years passed and Tommy (who had actually
KEPT our business card) contacted us and wanted to interview Copus and
feature us on the cover of his new magazine, 'World Rhythm' (May-June
2004). It is a great publication coming out of Southern California (Pine
Mountain Lodge, just outside L.A.) that showcases independent, creative
thinkers in many realms of global music and culture. We have continued
our relationship with Tommy and now Royal Kent writes a column on what's
happening in the Bay Area entitled "Poetry and Peace" and
Copus Multimedia is a regular ad contributor. Tommy's newest CD of guitar
wizardry is scheduled to be out in May, so he has asked Wendy and Royal
to come on down and perform with him at his CD release party. Way cool!
In addition, he's lining up some events for this summer at a club/restaurant
where he's asked Copus to perform. Many things are blooming, as I said
earlier…Thanks, Tommy! You can pick up copies of the magazine
at various clubs/cafes around town or you can read it online at: www.colinmckay.net/worldrhythm.
4.
VIDEO CLIP
It's short, but it's sweet! Check out a little clip from the wonderful
performance at Clarion Music -
www.sonicbids.com/copus. Thanks, Clara and Jo. More video to come
to our websites soon.
5.
WHISPERS CD
I know many of you are eagerly awaiting the debut release by Phoenix
Rising (aka Wendy + Monica). It is being completed as we speak and we
anticipate it to be in your hot, little hands by the 1st of May. We
are very happy with the results - the hard work by the talented folks
at Spark Studios in Emeryville (www.spark.com) and Gate Media in Walnut
Creek (www.gatemedia.com). Save your pennies!
6. POETRY
SECTION
In anticipation of the release of 'Whispers', below is the poem from
the title track to whet your appetite. The poem, the music, and the
piano for the piece are by Wendy and the amazing multiphonic gymnastics
on the flute are by Monica (bet you can't wait to hear it now!).

warm bedroom eyes beckon me
sweet alcohol haze
neon alleyways
whispers of love eternal
night - in the city
where are you now
- dear?
stillness of the afterglow
cold winds to the sea
whispers of love
eternal
whispers of love
Stay healthy and strong! Happy Spring!
