1. East Bay folks - the spot is Vallejo. The rare combination of talent and positivity is something you need to experience. The open mic that follows our feature spot draws an amazing pool of talent. 2. Thanks to the wonderful response from the SomArts Gallery event on August 7th (400+ people in attendance), COPUS has been asked for a return engagement this Saturday, August 23rd. You don't want to miss this one - SomArts Gallery, 934 Brannan @ 8th Street (by the Concourse, San Francisco). Johnny of www.artworksf.com is an amazing artist, organizer, and personification of calm under pressure. Stop by and say 'hello'. Performances by poets, musicians, dancers, comedians are from 12 noon to 4pm (COPUS goes on just before 3pm). Nude models for artists to draw (and others to ogle!).

3. Promotional tour fundraiser. Thursday, August 28th, COPUS is holding a fundraiser for its upcoming venture to the 2NMC event in Nashville this September where thousands of music industry professionals gather to network. Royal, Wendy, and Monica will be performing Friday, September 12th, at the elite Nashville restaurant/jazz club, Cafe 123 (www.faisons.com). Jody Faison owns several hip spots in Nashville - if you want to whet your appetite, visit www.faisons.com and click on Cafe 123. Maybe you want to join us there for dinner!

Also, we are saving to attend the Midem conference again in Cannes, France this January - in order to line up European tours for next summer with the entire ensemble. The fundraiser takes place at the beautiful Walnut Creek Civic Arts Center, 111 N. Wiget, Walnut Creek. 8pm. $12 adults - $3 students (under 18). If you are taking public transportation, there is a shuttle from BART. Please let me know if you need transportation assistance or directions.

4. Raffle tickets are going fast for the 4-night stay at beautiful Zamas (www.zamas.com) in Tulum, Mexico. Close to the Mayan ruins, the cabanas are gorgeous and right on the sea! $10 - drawing at the August 28th fundraiser. 5. Poetry section. We have been receiving some powerful words from all of you. Here's our selection for August from Kathy B!

I found a hairstylist in my neighborhood!
I took a huge leap toward my own individuation
and both in the same day!
I never would have expected that the day before a vacation would yield so
much fruit...
Strawberries of success, pomelos of potential
And...pomegranittes of pain.
Apples of apathy knocked off the tree by a mighty marvelous wind!
tumbling to the ground!
Bruises make them softer, now easier to eat.
Daldeberries of delusion enticing me!
Cumquats of connection whispering that with friends, reality is better.

"So much fruit today!", I scream as the sun beats down on me in this
field of my imagination. "I want them all! But today was supposed to
be the day before the fruit!"

"Fruit comes when you least expect it but your mouth is open."
"What?!!!", I scream, panting as I spin around to see the origin of the
voice.
No one there...surprise!
The sweet but sour voice of "psychosis" or is it the succulence of
Spirit?

"Plant me wild plum trees!"
"Ok", She says.

"For me, tend trees of telloilatarts!"
"Ok", He says, winking.

"Well!", I sigh, hands on hips like the 5 year-old I sometimes am. "You
seem so giving! Who the fuck are you anyway?"

"I am you. I am inside you. I am surrounding you. I love you."

I sit down, sinking into the warm earth below me, enjoying the warmth
around my backside. And I realize just then as mud is dripping through my
toes, my hands esctatically fumbling through the warm dirt,
that I am having a decidedly prayerful moment.

But I am not in church, not reading the Bible, the Torah, or the teachings
of Buddah. Not sitting quietly in my Sunday best in a pew that smells
of wood, not sitting in vapasana on a pillow that smells of incense,
not lighting a candle for some supposedly Godlike Guru and not trying
to clear my mind.

No! I am sitting in hot dirt, tearing off my clothes in a frenetic yearning
to feel the mud against my skin. Thinking of masturbation, fornication,
large cocks and my own round breasts. Crying at how good it all smells,
these mud minerals sun drenched dirt clumps and the fruits of my inner
world.

But yet here I am, close to my God and close to my Earth. Close to my body,
close to my Self.

I giggle with the joy of paradox, laugh at my own lasciviousness and marvel
at my own magnificence.

And then I awake, blinking, trying to focus, eyes burning and dry. In my
room, complete with music stand, pictures of friends, a six drawer dresser
and several pairs of animal eyes looking up at me knowingly.

And then I smell it...faint at first but as I suspend disbelief it grows
stronger.

Mixed in with the odors of morning and the smell of my essence, sun
drenched dirt.

Thanks, as always, for your spirits!
