JULY NEWSLETTER

Greetings friends and fans of Copus:

Some exciting things on the plate for your favorite Spoken Word/Millennium Music Ensemble, Copus!

First, we are headed south to Los Angeles where we will once again peform at the Pyschobabble Café in the Los Feliz area, where the intellectuals (poets, writers, actors and the true illuminati) gather to enjoy new and dynamic thought. This is all taking place on Sunday, July 21, 2002. A very fine place, the Pyschobabble Café is located at 1866 N. Vermont @ Franklin. Our last outing there was big fun. Copus flute player extraordinaire, Monica Williams, was featured as she will be on this outing. The folks turned out and we were treated to the warm hospitality of Kenny Klein, a very fine fiddler himself. Kenny and his group will also be performing on the bill.

Copus will record a special 2-hour music and spoken word television show on July 27th. It will be recorded at the brand new, state-of the-art studio for Channel 29, San Francisco's very own cable access channel. It will feature some great local poets and musicians…we'll keep you posted as to the broadcast date. This is full circle for Royal Kent of Copus. He is one of the channel's original producers dating way, way back. In fact, he produced a poetry and music show called "Into The Eighties" which aired during prime time, every week!

The Copus Catalog is coming right along, thank you. It features some of the finest independently-produced CDs around. Spoken Word artists abound in the catalog. It includes 'Urbanthology', a live recording of the famed Café International open mic hosted by performance artist Ramu Aki; ' The Alchemy of the Word', a collection of voices from the edge - San Francisco poets recorded live; 'Later Than You Think' by Copus, featuring the master strokes of Wendy Loomis and the Def poetry of Royal Kent, just to name a few. In addition, you'll find Wendy's solo piano CDs 'Strange Conjunction' and 'Piano and Friends' as well as Royal's unpublished photos of Bob Marley, both on and offstage, complete with custom framing by Stevinski Brewster of 4Head Press in SOMA. The look and feel of the Catalog is designed by local graphic artist Colin Hussey. Look for the dynamic Copus Catalog soon - both on and offline.

Both Wendy and Royal recenty attended the world premiere of 'Def Poetry Jam' by Russell Simmons held at Theater on the Square in San Francisco. They both give it a thumbs up! It plays in the city until July 28th and will hit Broadway this October. Go check it out! Spoken word and music has gone mainstream! Count us in…we are Copus!
