Upcoming events
...
THURSDAY,
JUNE 12 - Rafael's Bar, 301 Nebraska Street, Vallejo - 'Listen
+ Be Heard' program hosted by Tony Mims and Martha Cinader. Royal and
Tony go back to the first days in Leslie Simon's Poetry for the People
Class. For those of you who attended the Soulful Sundown last month,
you heard the incredible poetry duet of Tony and Martha - in conjunction
with the new Copus piece, "Reflections on War" - the combination
of which was unrehearsed and pretty awesome. Especially to our East
Bay and Marin friends, Vallejo is very accessible. 9pm - $5.
SATURDAY,
JUNE 21 -
6th Street Community Fair (between Mission and Howard Streets) Noon
til 6PM. YesI Productions presents DJs: Tuff Love Resistance Sound -
Featuring: DJ Ras David I, Selector 138, and the Cisco Kid. Crucial
Reggae in the mix, and COPUS featuring: Composer/Pianist Wendy Loomis,
Poet/Spoken Word Artist Royal Kent
also in the Copus mix
Flute
Monica Williams, Drums Greg McRay, Vocals Barbara Jaspersen, Cello Larry
Wissink. A new festival where lots of press and the infamous Mayor Willie
Brown of San Francisco are scheduled to be stylin'. And with Copus in
the house, how can you miss?
SUNDAY,
JUNE 22 - The
Cannery, 2801 Leavenworth @ Columbus (outside stage, across from Las
Margaritas) - 2-5pm - free. The brick courtyard of The Cannery, to me,
is the one of the few spots in the Fisherman's Wharf area that actually
has a nice feel and sense of history to it. With a little luck there
will be sun that afternoon, so why not stop by and perhaps have a margarita
or a few chips and salsa while listening to Copus? It will make you
glad that you live here and are not a tourist.
"Poets And
Composers" radio show hits the Internet waves every Tuesday night
at 9pm PST (midnight in NY, Wednesday @ 6am in Paris). We've had some
amazing spoken word artists and musicians of all sorts grace our show,
including Stevie Harris, Sparlha Swa, Jethro Jeremiah Band, Wordwind,
to name a few, and the response from around the world has been wonderful.
The upcoming show will feature Cafe International's Open Mic host, poet,
shaman Ramu Aki and young master of ceremonies supreme, MC. Check it
out! www.artistfirst.com.
POETRY
SECTION -
This month's selection is called "Time". It was written by
a brilliant, young person at the St. Mary's Medical Center/McAuley Institute
where Copus led a poetry/music workshop for a group of wonderful adolescents
who are asking the big questions.
Send us one of your
poems and we will feature it in one of our upcoming newsletters. Prizes
to follow later. Stay tuned!
Time
Time are not wait
for the old man.
From the street,
down the roads,
Time are gone very fast
People complain
Unhappy
Frustrate
Upset
Nervous
Time is very fast. We can't use them all.
A timemaker tells.
The court
It is a bad day, time is gone very fast.
It's time to go to jail.
Crying
Screaming
Disappoint
Upset
In the court, no one is winner.
Cruelly
Serious
Unfair
Root
Confuse
What a unfair court. I don't obey it more.
Tired are very harm.
From the body
Un to my face.
What a monster to it.
Dizzy
Upset
Painful
Sleepy
All is very harm.
The bodymaker say that.
I am falling love
to you.
I can't forget your smile.
Your smiling.
Laughing
Happiness
Hopeful
Friendly
I can't forget yourself
No one can be better than you.
Be well and remember
"it's to the journey we give everything"!
