MARCH NEWSLETTER

Greetings from the windswept, slightly rain-soaked crew! As the sun peaks tentatively through the clouds, we have lots of opportunities for you to feel the warm, sunny rays of Copus!

1. Gigs galore
2. Poets + Composers
3. FAVE.com
4. Café Press
5. Poetry Section

1. GIGS GALORE

FRIDAY, MARCH 5th - This Friday morning, start your day out positively with a reflective service at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 1187 Franklin Street. Starts at 9:15 am (yes, that's am!). Nice people, great message, beautiful music, inspirational words by the Copus trio (Royal Kent, poet; Wendy, composer/pianist; Monica, flute). Free.

SATURDAY, MARCH 6th - Same event as listed above. Wendy on the piano.

MONDAY, MARCH 8th - 2pm. The Burlingame Music Club periodically hosts afternoon events where they invite young music students to perform followed by a group of professionals (that would be Copus, in this instance). From the ticket revenue, they give donations to students who aspire to continue their studies - a worthy cause. If you are in the Peninsula region and have the luxury of scheduling your time independently, drop on by and feel the power. 241 Park Road, Burlingame (off 101 south, Broadway/ Burlingame exit).

FRIDAY, MARCH 12th - 8pm. Poet/shaman/producer ramu aki has been producing the Friday open mic/feature act night at Café International for some time now. It is a wondrous place to spend an evening among interesting, diverse, creative folks who are still asking the big questions. On March 12th, Phoenix Rising will be the feature act. This newly-created duo is comprised of Wendy and Monica - the women nucleus of Copus. We promise to deliver beauty that will make you see stars of many colors! 508 Haight @ Fillmore. Open mic sign-up at 7:30 - Phoenix Rising around 9pm. Free.

SUNDAY, MARCH 14th - 6:30pm. Phenomenal flutist Monica Williams has been teaching at the Walnut Creek Civic Arts center for 3 years now. On this particular Sunday, the faculty recital takes place. The Copus trio returns once again to share the stage with Monica. We are always honored to have our original creations be included on the same program with Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. We'd love to have you join us! 111 N. Wigget Lane, Walnut Creek. $5.

THURSDAY, MARCH 25th - 9pm. This is coming to be one of our favorite gigs, Rafael's Bar in Vallejo. Those of you who complain about nothing exciting happening in San Francisco need to put a few dollars in the tank and cross the bridge(s) to Vallejo where a scene is happening at the "Listen + Be Heard" event. Hosted by the dynamic duo, Martha Cinader and Tony Mims, the night always includes amazing poetry and music, inexpensive and delicious food (try the Cajun shrimp dish!), and lots of laughter and hugs. Plus Copus! How can you beat that for merely $7? 301 Nebraska Street @ Tennessee (about 2 miles from Vallejo-Mare Island exit off route 80).

2. POETS + COMPOSERS, FRIDAY, MARCH 12t
h - 8pm PST. Yes, our monthly Internet radio show, "Poets + Composers", is being aired at the same time as Phoenix Rising - so, if you can't make it to a live performance you can settle in with your laptop and listen to a couple of amazing women artists do their thing. Special guests Beth Custer and Lichi Fuentes carry the show with music and stories from the heart. Beth, originally from Fredonia, New York (hello to my brother Michael and family living there!), started her musical career at age 3 - first the piano, then the clarinet, and on to wonderful improvisations, creations, and voice (www.bethcuster.com). Lichi, who came to the Bay Area from Chile, carries the influences of her family and country - particularly the memories of a brutal political dictatorship - into songs written and sung with passion and tenderness (www.lichifuentes.com). Check out these powerful women on the 12th at: www.artistfirst.com.

5. Poetic License -

When I said to you
I had caught a glimpse
Of the dark aura you possessed

I spoke of the deep feelings
That are evoked
Once my eyes come to rest

Upon the dark shades
Of the painters brush
Which leaves on canvas
A garden lush

And green
Whose beauty goes
Quietly unseen
Amid the noise and rush

To let
The leaves radiate
A special elegance

Found in the garden
Only as the
Sun sets
