Copus
will be performing a very special service on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 26th,
at the Episcopal church on Union Street. Wendy was recently hired as
the part-time music director of the Sunday evening 'unplugged' service.
Minister Lily deYoung is a recent East Coast transplant and she brings
all that dynamic, Boston and New Jersey energy to her great messages.
On the 26th we'll jointly presenting the idea of 'The Many Faces of
God'. Included in the mix will be lovely Monica Williams on flute, powerhouse
Greg McRay on drums, prophetic poets Royal Kent and Wiseproof on the
spoken mic, and yours truly at the piano. If you haven't been in a church
lately, perhaps now is the moment to dip your feet in the water and
see how much has changed since then. St. Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church,
2325 Union Street @ Steiner. 5:15pm. Free (donations accepted). www.smvsf.org.
Copus will be returning
once again to the scene of the crime at Rafael's Bar in Vallejo on THURSDAY,
OCTOBER 28th. 'Listen + Be Heard' is one of the most creative endeavors
happening around the Bay. Run by poets/MCs Martha Cinader and Tony Mims,
the evening always promises lots of talent, laughter, thought, and warmth.
301 Nebraska Street, Vallejo. 9pm. $5 cover. www.rafaelsbarvallejo.com.

COPUS MUSIC LABEL, WEBSITE LAUNCH.
Copus Music is an independent label that creates and presents contemporary,
original material with a positive message - rap without violence, hip
hop with a degree, jazz with lyrics, classical with a beat. Gil Scott
Heron meets Chick Corea. Maya Angelou meets Stravinsky. Peter Tosh meets
Debussy. Our goal is to promote intelligent, socially conscious words
in combination with lyrical, beautiful melodies. If you think you're
ready for it, be bold and click here - www.copusmusic.com.
3.
CAFÉ PRESS STORE.
You now have access to some beautifully-designed items such as Copus
Music ballcaps (soon to be collector's items on EBay!), T-shirts, lunchboxes,
and even a wall clock. The lush logo was designed by none other than
the famous Peter Greco who counts among his credits the logos for Santana,
TV show Cheers, and The New York Times. In the 'Poetic License' section
of our store, we are featuring products with designs by San Francisco
wizard ramu aki. The bold colors and swirling patterns of power that
are his trademarks work perfectly with lyrics by Royal Kent on the 'haves
have' blank journal, tote bag, and postcards. I just purchased a spaghetti
strap T-shirt with the Copus logo on it (white with black letters) -
and I love it! Perfect on those days when the sun emerges! Secure and
protected orders at: www.cafeshops.com/copusmusic.
4.
PHOENIX RISING DEBUT CD.
Wendy and Monica have begun recording the first Phoenix Rising CD at
Spark Studios in Emeryville. Engineered by the talented Daniel David
Feinsmith (www.danieldavidfeinsmith.com) and run by the wizard Tony
Mills, Spark is a great place for your next recording project (www.sparkworld.com).
Wendy is thrilled by the Yamaha grand piano and Monica revels in the
ambient reverb created by the 2-floor open ceiling space. Wait until
you hear her amazing sounds on both the alto and bass flutes. It is
anticipated the CD will be released before the end of the year, but
just to tease you - please visit www.copusmusic.com on the music page
to hear a sample.
5.
SUNSET YOUTH SERVICES WORKSHOPS.
Copus is working together with Sunset Youth Services directors Ron and
Dawn on a series of Poetry/Music Workshops for teens. We anticipate
some great writing coming out of these young people and look forward
to the production of a compilation CD and a chapbook. Stay tuned for
pre-holiday gift sale announcements! www.sunsetyouthservices.org.
6.
POETS + COMPOSERS.
Make sure you check in every 2nd + 4th Fridays of the month at 8pm PST
to hear the latest thoughtful interviews and CD cuts by the Bay Area's
finest independent artists. On September 10th, we will be 'airing' some
live recording segments from the 2004 Reggae on the River event - plus
special guest Ras Digital with a taste from his new reggae CD. We are
averaging 8,000 listeners worldwide per 'airing', so if you haven't
listened yet it is definitely time. If you want to recommend a poet,
composer, or singer/songwriter to be on a future show, please let us
know. www.artistfirst.com.

To measure your success, ask yourself:
-have I prevented World War 3?
-have I fed the starving of the world?
-have I built an ocean liner?
-have I launched a rocket to Mars?
-have I invented a cure for cancer?
Or
Have I made one person happy today?
(daughter)
sculptures of belongings
in under around
shopping carts
a man with ankles an shins
the consistency of rice cakes
during one lunchtime
in the park
two bottle can collectors sift
through the trashcans
poverty is a competitive business
America the homeless
America the heartless
America the grave
(father)
A daughter in love
Is like a dog
With a new bone!
(daughter)
I leaped from porches
You were there
Straight back, furry face
Stiff upper lip, soft heart
Proud-gentle
Fierce competitor, soothing healer
You are there still, dad
Thank you for continuing
to believe.
Peace,
Wendy + Royal
